Vaccine Technology Course, 9th Edition

6 to 10 October 2024

ESACT offers an introductory intensive course in cell culture produced viral vaccines to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding research and development in academia and industry in the field. This course introduces the basic principles of vaccination and manufacturing of viral vaccines. Also, the course will provide an overview of the advanced strategies to respond to the challenges of new and established viral infection diseases.

The course has been designed to benefit those starting their research activity in this field, both from Academia, Industry or Public Health Agencies. It is also of interest for those wishing to up-date their knowledge and know-how in cell production of viral vaccines.

A limited number of grants, covering the course fee, are provided by ESACT. Applicants to the grants should indicate it in the course application, together with a motivation statement. Priority will be given to young PhD students from Academia.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Principles of immunology and virology
  • Cell lines for vaccine production
  • Vaccine markets and immunization policies
  • Upstream process development and intensification
  • Analytical and potency assays
  • Downstream processing of viral vaccines
  • Vaccine formulation and delivery systems
  • Equipment, QbD and PAT, artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Regulatory issues
  • Vaccine development and supply solutions

Case studies for special vaccines:

  • Recombinant vaccines: Virus like particles (VLP’s) and vectored vaccines
  • Case study: Polio vaccines: overview on history, upstream processing and regulation
  • Case study: Dengue vaccine development Vaccine approaches, clinical studies
  • Case study: Influenza vaccines: pandemic, seasonal vaccine, recombinant to egg-based vaccine

All applications should be sent until 20th of July, 2022 (without further extension of deadline)

Accepted applicants will be notified after the application deadline and should confirm their attendance and

complete payment by August 15th, 2022.

If more applicants apply for the course than can be accepted, a selection will have to be made on the basis of CV and balance of participants to ensure the best possible interaction between participants and lecturers.

Registration Fee

The course fees for 2022 will be as follows:

EUR 1000 for participants of academia and EUR 1600 for participants from industry.

The fee covers course registration and materials (course book), accommodation in two-bed rooms (shared with another participant), meals, transportation from/to Barcelona airport (see the time schedule for the bus below). Participants have the possibility to be hosted in single room (limited to availability) at an extra cost of 150 Euros to be paid directly in the hotel.

A limited number of grants, covering the course fee (not travel cost), are provided by ESACT. Applicants to the grants should indicate it in the course application, together with a motivation statement. Priority will be given to young PhD students from academia.

LOCATION AND TRAVEL INFORMATION

The course will be held in Hotel Terramar, a 3-star hotel (www.hterramar.com) in a small town named Llafranc in the heart of Costa Brava, Girona, Spain.

The hotel is right on a very nice sandy beach, providing a cosy and relaxing atmosphere for the participants.  Weather in Llafranc at this time of the year is generally pleasant. Travel organization to the meeting is of participants responsibility, ensuring their participation to the full course. Access by road from Girona airport (30 min) or Barcelona airport (90 min) is suggested.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

ONE BUS will be leaving from Barcelona airport at 18h on Sunday 2nd October to drive participants to Hotel Terramar at Llafranc.
On Thursday 6th October, ONE BUS will be leaving from Hotel Terramar at 15h to drive participants to Barcelona airport.

Participants should arrange their travelling accordingly or alternatively arrange for their transportation on their own.

Likewise at the end of the course, a bus will be available to transfer participants back to Barcelona – leaving Llafranc by 3pm, and arriving at Barcelona Airport around 4:00-4:30. Again, please make your travel arrangements considering these time limitations.
